The Light Bulb Effect

I want to share some things with you, and I have to admit I’m a little hesitant. You might think I’m a bit woo-woo for it… but hear me out, there’s a point to what I have to say and it has direct relevance to how you can open yourself up to receive more abundance in your life.

I love researching mystical traditions, and learning various kinds of intuitive arts and divination. I always have.

When I was 16, my maternal grandmother (who was well known to have a highly developed sixth sense) taught me how to read people’s ‘fortunes’ using normal playing cards and also tea leaves. I practiced those arts for many years for friends, who always said my readings were very helpful and accurate. But I never really took it that seriously. I mean, I never quit my day job to do it!

I later went on to study Tarot, and also began doing that for friends. More recently, in the last ten years, I’ve experienced a further opening of my intuitive ability and began spontaneously receiving animal spirit guide messages. I figured I’d better learn how to work with these messages more effectively, so I did some study with Steven D. Farmer Ph.D. (who is one of the world leaders in interpreting and working with animal spirit guide symbology) and learned how to do animal spirit guide journeys for myself and for others.

These intuitive tools have helped me so much to deepen my understanding of the significance of what’s going on in my own life, how to navigate challenges and spot opportunities, and how to help others to do the same.

Mostly, though, I’ve kept these gifts private. I use them to help my friends and loved ones, but in my professional life I’ve kept quiet about how much I’m guided by my intuition.

What is intuition anyway?

As you know, one of my main areas of expertise is with respect to the power of the subconscious mind, and especially subconscious beliefs. Our subconscious mind exerts a very powerful influence on our actions and therefore our outcomes. Making sure that our subconscious beliefs are positive and helpful, rather than hindering and unhelpful, represents some of the most powerful work we can do in order to influence the outcomes in our lives.

Our subconscious communicates to us through feelings and urges that we tend to act on without thinking… and then we rationally justify those actions using our conscious minds, after the fact. And here’s the trap: sometimes, we mistakenly call those subconscious urges ‘intuition’.

When we do that, we’re actually letting our subconscious programming run the show. And unless we’ve already done a thorough inventory and reprogramming of any faulty beliefs we may have taken on during our childhood conditioning, it can really lead us astray.

This was the main thrust of my book “The Abundance Code: How to Bust the 7 Money Myths for a Rich Life Now.” (Published by Hay House and available on Amazon here).

But that’s not intuition. That’s subconscious programming.

Intuition comes from a different part of our consciousness which I call the ‘super-conscious’. This is higher level guidance, and learning to receive and interpret these messages is a whole other realm of consciousness work.

We all have access to our super-conscious guidance system. Most of us have just stopped listening to it. It often speaks to us very softly, and it’s not always easy to interpret.

Super-conscious messages are more like spiritual teachings. They’re not always directive (though occasionally they can be) – they’re usually meant for contemplation so that we can deepen and evolve as spiritual beings. So we can understand ourselves better. This contemplation can pave the way for profound insights, Aha’s and light bulb moments that can really shift our consciousness.

The light bulb effect.

These light bulb moments can then help you greatly on your journey towards greater freedom, choice and abundance in your life. Towards knowing the path that is uniquely right for YOU, and having the certainty and faith to take it.

So… I encourage you to do that very important subconscious re-programming belief work, AND also to start working with your super-conscious as well as a pathway to receiving even more abundance into your life.

What are some practices that you can do to start re-activating your ability to receive intuitive guidance?

  • Before you start ask the Universe (or God or Higher Power) for its unfailing and absolute protection and support on your journey, and to please send you only the purest and most divine guidance. Doing this will ensure that you’re accessing guidance from the highest possible source.
  • Get a deck of guidance cards  – choose any deck you are attracted to – and pull one card a week from the deck. Contemplate the significance of the message of that card for the whole week. (I suggest not doing it too often, like daily, because you probably won’t give yourself enough time for deeper contemplation if you do that.)
  • Super-conscious intuition is like a conversation with the universe. Be open to receiving messages, symbols and signs. Ask for them. Start the conversation! If you ask, you will receive. Then take time to contemplate the meaning of the messages deeply (once you see them) – don’t jump to easy conclusions. Ponder. Be open to re-interpreting their meaning as well, as your contemplation gently opens the doors of perception to deeper levels of wisdom.
  • If you’re not even sure that a ‘super-consciousness’ exists to be conversing with in the first place, conduct some simple experiments to prove it to yourself. A great book of practical experiments you can do for this purpose is Pam Grout’s “E-Squared: Nine Do-It-Yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality” (also published by Hay House and available on Amazon here).
  • Try not to take it all too seriously. Treat it as an interesting exploration. And be open to sometimes seeing the exquisite sense of humour of the universe!

Happy explorations! And let me know in the comments if this post has helped you.

To YOUR Abundance,

Julie Ann Cairns

P.S. On a related topic, I recently wrote about the importance of distinguishing between the subconscious and the super-conscious in a recent article for LivingNow magazine. You can access that article here.
