Honestly, I’m having a bit of a moment here.
I’m a little tired of hearing – from ‘spiritual’ people who either directly, or indirectly, position themselves as divinely appointed messengers – that we all need to evolve. Like, NOW.
Apparently we’re all being called to participate in some grand evolution of consciousness, and we’d better friggen hurry up. Or the apocalypse will come. Or something. Something bad.
It’s like, if I’m judged to not be evolved enough spiritually, then I’m somehow letting the side down. Risking the collapse of the entire human race.
And YES, this is total projection on my part! And YES, it begs the question of how one’s spiritual ‘evolution’ level is measured anyway… But can you relate at all? Are you feeling it?
This is just another form of shaming, people. Of creating fear. Of judging and sowing a sense that we are somehow not good enough. Not evolved enough. Not spiritual enough. Not enough, period. And that we need to be fixed.
This is not my definition of Abundance.
Here’s what I believe: that we are already ‘evolved’. That our true nature is already residing in a pure state of awareness, unlimited consciousness and total abundance. That everything and everyone is a mirror on our path. That there’s really no one else here, because ultimately we are One. And that we either choose to surrender to that truth, or we choose to resist it. Moment by moment.
I’m not more evolved than you. There’s no difference between you and I on the level of pure consciousness. There’s nothing to achieve either, because the perfection is already here and now. There are only barriers to dissolve. The barriers between our hearts, that keep us divided and separate. The mental barriers that say I’m either better than you, or not as good as you.
I’m not. You’re not.
One of my favorite quotes is from the spiritual aspirant and teacher Ram Dass. He said: “We’re all just walking each other home.”
We can help each other… I believe that. I can reflect things for you. You can reflect things for me. And then we can reflect upon those things within ourselves. Search out the truth that resonates for us, in that moment, within our own being. Accept each other, and accept ourselves. Love each other, and love ourselves. Or don’t. We have the choice.
I hope I can be of service to you on the path. That’s the choice I try to make as much as possible in the time that I have to share. And I know that you can be of service to me too. And in helping each other, I believe that we bring everything closer to that “home” Ram Dass is talking about..
Can we get there by striving and pushing and forcibly ‘evolving’? Maybe not. I feel it’s more about relaxing and noticing and being curious. (Years ago I wrote a song in which one of the lyrics was: Though I try to pull aside the veils that cloud my mind, they can only be moved by the breeze.)
Maybe it’s okay to stop trying so hard, and instead begin allowing? Let our true nature come forth, in it’s own way and on its own timetable.
And while we may endeavour to uncover and dissolve our inner blockages, and do our own spiritual work… I hope it’s not being done because we think we’re broken. We’re not. And neither because we need to evolve or be fixed. We don’t. But just because we realise that we’ve temporarily forgotten who we ALREADY ARE. The power we already have. The unlimited abundance we already have access to.
I hope we’re doing it all because we want to come home. Together. To Love.
And if we don’t, if we choose to stay divided… well, I doubt the world will end. Some may even say it’s the very thing that makes the world persist the way it is.
As always, let me know in the comments if this post has helped you in any way…
To YOUR Abundance,
Julie Ann Cairns
P.S. I’m not taking aim at spiritual guides or teachers, by the way. There are some amazing enlightened spiritual masters out there with valuable information to share to help guide you on your path? Of course! I believe I’ve found such a guide in my spiritual teacher Amma. I don’t believe that blindly though – I’ve studied her teachings and observed how she walks the talk for over 25 years. I’m grateful every day for the amazing guidance and grace that I’ve received in the process. It reminds me that I’m loved, and I’m not alone. Someone is cheering me on.
Whatever you need on the path will, I believe, find you. And sometimes, you’ll also be tested. So please, keep your eyes and ears open! While there are some great spiritual teachers out there, there are also some very persuasive cult leaders, charlatans and narcissistic personality types. Learn how to discern the difference, and have some healthy boundaries. There’s an important balance to strike between being open, and being gullible. It’s not all rainbows and feathers!
